3 Tips on How to Have a Safe, Mindful Halloween

Happy Halloween, everyone!

Halloween has to be one of my favorite holidays of the year- the decorations, the costumes…the candy! That’s right, just because I’m a registered dietitian nutritionist doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy a good peanut butter cup! But just because there’s candy galore doesn’t mean the day shouldn’t be approached with the same mindful eating approach as the rest of the year. That also doesn’t mean you can’t have your candy and eat it too.

The following tips can help you and your loved ones bring this mindful eating approach to your Halloween celebration:

  1. Make sure to fuel up by eating a full meal before trick-or-treating or handing out treats…try to eat a meal which has protein, fiber, and fat (our family is doing pizza and salad this year!)

  2. When it comes time for your kids to check out their candy haul (once it’s been examined by the adults to ensure safety) and begin digging in, encourage them to describe the candies tastes, textures, etc and take their time to savor each piece (something we can all do while we’re eating our candies!)

  3. Make sure to hydrate if you and your kiddos are walking around for several hours; you want to ensure no dehydration kicks in which can cause headaches, dizziness, tiredness.

With these quick tips, have a safe, healthy, Happy Halloween!
